How to Link Notes in Evernote – A Step-by-Step Guide

Evernote is a powerful note-taking tool. It allows users to add a variety of content into notes and organize them using mechanisms such as notebooks, stacks and tags. But what if you want to link two or more notes together? Many times you want one note to reference another note by placing a link to that other note in your note. Fortunately, Evernote makes it very easy to do this.

Perhaps the easiest way to link one Evernote note to another on the Mac or Windows is to do the following:

  1. Open Evernote
  2. Right-click on the note you want to reference in another note
  3. Select Copy Note Link. This will put the link in your clipboard
  4. Open the note that you want to put the link
  5. Paste the link into the note

This blog post will review the ways to link one note to another in Evernote across the following platforms:

  • Web
  • MacOS
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Windows

Linking Notes Together in Evernote Web

To link one note to another in Evernote Web, do the following:

  1. Log into Evernote Web
  2. Open the note you want to reference in another note
  3. Click to the vertical ellipsis button in the upper-far-right hand corner of the note
  4. Select Copy Internal Link to copy the link to your clipboard. A message will appear that states “Internal link to [NAME OF NOTE] copied to clipboard.”
  5. Close this note and open the note where you want to place the link
  6. Right-click where you want to place the link and paste it there.

For pasting the link your options are:

  • Right-click on the line that you want to paste the link and select Paste
  • Use the keyboard shortcut for paste (Command V on MacOS, Control V on Windows)

Your link should now see the link with the title of the referenced note in this note. If you click on the link, it will open the referenced note. However, it is an internal link. The link will look something like this:

If you notice, the URL does not start with http or https but, rather, it starts with evernote. This is an indicator to you that his link is looking to reference an application not a web link. If you were to paste an Evernote internal note link into your web browser you would likely get a message like the one below:

If you were to click Open Evernote, it would launch Evernote and open your note.

Linking Notes Together in Evernote for Mac

Linking notes together on the Mac is essentially the same process as the web version of Evernote. To link a note to another note in Evernote for Mac, do the following:

  2. Go to Note -> Copy Note Link or use keyboard shortcut Control Option Command C
  3. Open the Note you want to place the link in
  4. Paste the link into the note by either right-clicking and choosing Paste or using keyboard shortcut Command V

Your note link should appear in your note. Just like with Evernote for Web, the link is an internal Evernote link. Clicking the link will open the referenced note.

Linking Notes Together in Evernote for iOS

The process to link notes in the iOS version of Evernote is slightly different. To link a note to another note in Evernote for iOS, do the following:

  1. Open the note you want to reference in another note
  2. Press on the Person icon in the top right hand corner of the note
  3. A pop-up window will appear. Select More Sharing Options
  4. A menu of options will appear. Select Copy Internal Link
  5. You should see the message Link Copied to confirm you have copied the note link to your clipboard
  6. Open the note you want to place the link in and either press and hold and select Paste or press the clipboard icon on the top left hand side of the virtual keyboard and select Paste

Your link should appear in your note.
