List Block in Notion – A Comprehensive Guide
List blocks are an often overlooked block in Notion that can be very powerful in certain situations. List blocks allow you to create a list of pages in Notion that function as a database. This provides a clean look to the block while retaining all of the power of Notion databases.
So how do you create a list block in Notion? Enclosed below are the steps required to create a list block in Notion:
- Open Notion to page where you want the list block to appear
- Click in the body of the page and type /list
- Scroll to the database section and choose either “List – Inline” or “List -Full Page” depending on whether you want the list block on the current page or on it’s own page
- Populate the list block with content

Creating a List Block
Let’s create our first list block. Open up Notion and navigate to the page where you want to place your list block or simply create a new Notion page.
Next, click in the body of your Notion page and type “/list“. A menu will appear. Scroll down to the “Database” section of the menu. Select either the “List -Inline” or “List – Full Page” option. The inline option places the list block on the current page while the full page option creates a new page for the list block.
Once you have made your selection, a list block template will appear on your page. The first thing to do is to give you list block a title.
To give your list block a title, click where it says “Untitled” and type in your new title and press “Enter“. Your new title should appear similar to the screenshot above.
Next, click on the first page in your Notion list block. It should look like the one above. All list block pages have the following default properties:
- Created – Date and Time the page was created
- Tags
Let’s give our page a new title.
Click where it says “Page 1“. Backspace out the existing text and type in the title you want to assign this page. Press “Enter” when you are done typing in the new title to assign it to the page.
Now, let’s add some properties to our page.
As we covered earlier, each default list block page comes with two default properties: Created and Tags. To add a new property, click the “+ Add a property” button as shown above. Select the property type and assign a name to your property. Repeat these steps until you have all the properties you want to have on your list block page.
As you can see from the screenshot above, I chose to add three new properties:
- Category
- Owner
- Reference Document
It is important to note that when you add a property to a list block page, it is automatically added to all the pages in the list block as well as any new pages you create in the list block in the future as you can see in the screenshot below:
Assign values for each of your properties on each page of your list block by clicking on the field to the right of the property name and entering a value.
Your list block should look similar to the screenshot above. You may be wondering why only your tags are showing? That is because list blocks allow you to view/hide properties in the list block view. Let’s make our new properties visible.
Hover over your list block and click on the ellipsis (…) button as shown in the screenshot above.
A menu will appear. Select the “Properties” option.
You should see the properties window appear. As you can see, by default, only the Tags property is toggled on. Toggle on the other properties to make them viewable as I have done in the screenshot below:
Your properties window should look like the screenshot above. Click outside the properties window to close it.
As you can see from the screenshot above, all of your properties should now be visible in the list block.
If you want to rearrange the order of the properties, simply hover over the list block and click the ellipsis (…) button. Select “Properties” from the menu. Click and hold on the double vertical ellipsis to the left of the property name and drag it to the position you want it as shown in the screenshot above. Repeat until you have the properties in the order you want and then click outside the properties window to close it.
Your list block should now show the properties in the order you want. But what if you want to rearrange the order of the pages in the list block? This is very easy to do.
Simply click and drag the double vertical ellipsis to the left of the page to the position you want it to be in the list block and release the mouse button. Repeat this process until the pages are in the order you desire.
Your pages should now be in the order you want.
