How to Use Backlinks in Notion Guide

How to Use Backlinks in Notion Guide

When working in Notion, I used to find myself wishing I could create bi-directional links between pages. In the past, Notion only supported one-way links. Backlinks (also known as bi-directional links) allow you to create links to pages that, in turn, create a backlink to the original page. Notion has implemented support for backlinks and this tutorial will teach you everything you need to know about backlinks to optimize your Notion workflow.

So how do you create a backlink in Notion? Listed below are the steps to create a backlink in Notion:

  1. Open Notion to the page where you want to link to another page
  2. Type [[ and type in the name of the page and select it from the menu
  3. Your link is created, click the link to go to the page
  4. You should see a backlink to the original page you added the link to

Let’s get started with the tutorial 😀.

Open Notion to the page where you want to link to another page

Open up Notion and navigate to the page you want to add the link to.

Type [[ and type in the name of the page and select it from the menu

Click on the place on the page you want to add a link to another page. Type either [[ or @ followed by the name of the page you want to add.

In our case, we want to create a link to the R Programming Page in our Notion workspace so I started typing the page title until it showed up as an option in the menu.

Once you see the page in the menu, select it by clicking or pressing on it.

A link will appear on the page with the title of the page it points to.

Click the link to go to the page

Click the link to go to the page. You will be taken to the page. Notice that at the top of your page there is a “linked to this page” section that contains a link to the original page. This is a backlink. When you created the original link to this page, Notion created a backlink of the destination page to the original page.

Creating a New Subpage

Sometimes you want to create a new subpage inline. This can be done by simply typing [[ and selecting the “Add new sub-page” option.

Your new sub-page will be created.

Creating a New Sub-page to a Different Page

One of the cool things you can do is create a new page with a link on the current page you are on that is actually a sub-page of a different page. Crazy, right? To do this simply, type [[ and select “Add new page in…“.

Type in the name of the page you want your new page to be a sub-page of. In our case, I will make my new page a sub-page of my “Data Science” page.

A link to your new page will appear on the current page. It is important to note that this page is not a sub-page of the current page, but rather of the page you selected, in our case, the “Data Science” page.

The page currently is titled “Untitled” so let’s change that by clicking on the link.

Give your page a new title.

Notice your page is now a sub-page of the page you selected, in our case the “Data Science” page. Pretty cool, right?

Getting started can seem daunting and scary (I know it was for me) but it doesn’t have to be. I was very lucky to find a program that that has helped me grow my blog to over 35,000 page views and a YouTube channel that is growing month-over-month.

Project 24 by Income School is the program that I have used. I have been a member for over a year now and just renewed my membership. I cannot recommend Project 24 enough! For more information on Income School, click the link below:
